Anthem was second best-selling game in 2019

BioWare's Anthem might have struggled in terms of its critical reception and subsequent community issues, but it was still the best-selling game on February 2019. According to the NPD Group, BioWare's online adventure not only topped the charts for last month, it was also the second highest launch month sales of any BioWare title outside of Mass Effect 3. Anthem is also the second best-selling game of year to date, surpassing last month's number two Resident Evil 2.

According to The NPD Group, an industry tracking firm, Anthem, BioWare’s latest title, cemented itself in the spot for the top selling game of February in the U.S. This success also marks Anthem as BioWare’s second biggest launch ever. The record of BioWare’s biggest launch still belongs to Mass Effect 3 which released back in 2012. It should be noted, however, that the NPD did not track the players who have access to the game through Origin Access Premier nor digital sales for PC.

Anthem easily topped the NPD’s February 2019 chart, even without PC digital sales included in the tally. According to the NPD, Anthem is now the second best-selling game released this year (after Kingdom Hearts III) and BioWare’s second-best launch ever after Mass Effect 3. Jump Force, the anime mash-up fighting game, debuted at number two. Its launch month sales are the third highest ever for a Bandai Namco game. Kingdom Hearts III, which was January 2019's best-selling game, held tight at third and remains the best-selling game of 2019. It’s also the fastest selling game in Kingdom Hearts history, beating out Kingdom Hearts II’s two-month sales by over 80 percent.

"On the one hand it’s been a rougher launch than expected. But then as I think back we also knew that big new online games tend to hit some kind of problem once they go live, so as much as we tested and prepared to make sure everything was ready, we were also ready for the possibility that unexpected issues might arise at launch. And we continue to be committed to responding to them," Hudson said in a blog post.

As a whole though, hardware sales on the year continue to decline. Hardware sales for other platforms continued to decline in February leading to a decline in total sales by 12 percent from the previous year. Sales on the entirety of 2019 in the realm of hardware are also down by 12 percent. This is to be somewhat expected though as we near the end of the PS4 and Xbox One life cycles. With another contentious month full of releases here in March 2019, it’ll be interesting to see which title stands above the rest when the next NPD sales figures come through.
