If you are not familiar with IRC, you can try the Java client provided by Starchat.

Some multi-network chat clients, such as Trillian or Pidgin, can connect to IRC.

Basic Commands

Type those, without a space before them, replacing the parts in allcaps withwhat you wish.

/nick NEWNICK: Changes your nickname to NEWNICK
/me DOES SOMETHING: Posts '* NICKNAME DOES SOMETHING' in the chat window rather than 'NICKNAME: [whatever it is you typed]'; Example: '/me laughs' displays '* Anke laughs'
/msg nickserv register EMAILADDRESS PASSWORD: Registers the nickname you are currently using.; Example: '/me laughs' displays '* Anke laughs'
/msg nickserv id PASSWORD: 'Log in'/Identify as the person who previously registered the nickname you're currently using
