Facing a diminished role with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Richie Hall took on the challenge of becoming the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive co-ordinator. Deatrich Wise Jr. Youth Jersey . Hall served as Saskatchewans defensive co-ordinator the last four seasons. Saskatchewans defence allowed the fewest touchdowns in the CFL while recording the most interceptions to anchor the Riders Grey Cup run in 2013. But after Saskatchewan posted a 10-8 record last season, head coach Corey Chamblin said in December that Hall wouldnt continue as the Riders defensive co-ordinator. Chamblin indicated Hall would be offered another role within the organization. Instead, Hall accepted the task of rebuilding a Winnipeg defence that allowed a CFL-worst 135.9 yards rushing per game. As a player, in all my years of coaching, the emphasis has always been weve got to stop the run, Hall told reporters during a conference call. If youre able to control the run, youre able to control the line of scrimmage and everything starts up in the trenches. You have to be able to counter everything they do. If a team is able to run the ball effectively against you, it can dictate the flow of the game. Defensively, we want to be able to dictate the flow of the game. Hall, 54, a native of San Antonio, has spent all but two of his 20 years coaching in the CFL with Saskatchewans defence. Hall was Edmontons head coach in 2009 and 2010 before returning to Regina, where hed also won Grey Cups in 89 as a player and 07 as the defensive co-ordinator. Hall replaces Gary Etcheverry, who was fired after just one season overseeing Winnipegs defence. The Blue Bombers missed the playoffs with a 7-11 record under rookie head coach Mike OShea. Richie has always had a good plan, OShea said. Theres no time that hes entered the game without a good plan. His players always feel solid about the plan. Hes also got the ability to adjust. His knowledge of our game and of the opposition, the various co-ordinators in our game, theres nothing Richie hasnt seen or dealt with. With former Hamilton head coach Marcel Bellefeuille returning as offensive co-ordinator, OShea feels well supported by the experience of his two assistants. I say this to the coaching staff when we first get together If you see me tripping, catch me, OShea said. There are mistakes that are going to be made and its up to all of us to make sure that we dont make those mistakes and they dont cost us games. First-year starter Drew Willy, the CFLs third-ranked passer with 3,769 yards, gave Winnipegs offence credibility and the defence did finish the season ranked second against the pass. But only expansion Ottawa (37) had fewer sacks than the Bombers (43), who also allowed a CFL-high 481 points. Chamblin told reporters in Regina last month he took over Saskatchewans defence for the West Division semifinal against Edmonton, a game the Riders lost 18-10 despite not allowing an offensive touchdown. OShea, a former all-star linebacker, insisted Hall would have freedom to implement his defensive packages with the Blue Bombers. One of the things I firmly believe in is you hire men youre going to trust and let them coach, he said. I wont be sticking my fingers in to upset the apple cart. Richie is going to have his systems. Hes going to put the time in to come up with a great plan. As head coach, he and I are going to talk about that plan before the game. Ill have input and there will be times I get on the headset and Ill talk about the flow of the game and what Id like to see. My preference is always to let the coaches coach. Thats what I hired him for. Hall was a CFL all-star as a defensive back in the 1980s with both Calgary and Saskatchewan. He says hell commute for now between Winnipeg and Regina, where his wife, Helen, is employed. After so many years of wearing green and white, Hall acknowledged it will be an adjustment wearing different colours on what was once an enemy football field. I think its going to be strange but you also understand its football, he said. You become committed to the jersey you put on. Thats the life of a coach, thats the life of a professional athlete. He also praised goalie Alex Stalock. What a difference a day makes. Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski scored in a shootout, and the Sharks beat the Blackhawks 3-2 on Sunday night for their first victory in Chicago in three years. "This was the best defensive effort weve had in this building in a while," McLellan said. Stalock made 33 saves through overtime as San Jose bounced back from a 4-3 loss at Colorado on Saturday. Jason Demers scored in the first period, and Brett Burns had a tying goal in the third. The Sharks allowed the first four goals in the loss to the Avalanche, and McLellan pulled Antti Niemi early in the second period in favour of Stalock. McLellan then talked about holding the goalies accountable in 2014, along with the rest of the team. "Its hard to demand perfection, but you have to demand as close as you can get to that," McLellan said. "The players tonight gave us that. It still was a tough task. To score only two and win a game against Chicago, youve done something pretty well." Couture beat Corey Crawford with a shot into the right side of the net after Stalock stopped Chicago captain Jonathan Toews leading off the shootout. Patrick Sharp then shot wide before Pavelski scored to give the Sharks their first win at the United Center since Dec. 30, 2010. Crawford made 40 saves in his first home start since he left Chicagos 6-2 victory over Florida on Dec. 8 because of a lower-body injury. He came back on Thursday and stopped 31 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss at the New York Islanders. "Its a tough loss to take when youre down by a goal, get up by one, and they tie it up again," Crawford said. "The shootout wasnt close, obviously. Tough loss." Defencemen Niklas Hjalmarsson and Michal Rozsival scored in the third period for the Blackhawks (29-7-9), who have earned at least one point in their last 10 games. It was their fifth home shootout loss. "Weve lost a few in a row here and I think it could be a little bit uncomfortable, or a lack of confidence, but weve got to work our way through it," coach Joel Quenneville said of the shootout trouble. "Weve left a lot of points on the board. "We could have put ourself in a better spot than were at. Derek Rivers Youth Jersey. Thats been a sour spot recently." San Jose (27-10-6) trailed 2-1 before Joe Thornton made a great pass across the crease to Burns, who slammed the puck in at 11:10 of the third. Thornton has 12 assists during an eight-game point streak, running his NHL-best total to 43 on the season. San Jose had dropped six straight in Chicago by a combined score of 24-11, including a 5-1 loss on Nov. 17. The Sharks and Blackhawks are two of the top teams in the Western Conference. "Any win in here is special," Thornton said. "Its a hard place to play. They play fast. They play hard, and any win in this building is huge." The Blackhawks had few quality scoring chances in the first two periods, with most of their shots coming from the outside. Stalock grabbed most of them cleanly, and San Jose swept away any potential problems around the net. Stalock had a little trouble with a shot by Duncan Keith with 8 1/2 minutes left in the second, but he fell on the puck before Andrew Shaw could get a stick on it. The NHLs highest-scoring team appeared to be headed for its first shutout of the season before two unlikely players combined to put the Blackhawks in front. First, Hjalmarsson skated toward the middle of the ice, got a pass from Toews and beat Stalock at 1:27 of the third. Then Rozsivals long slap shot through traffic made it 2-1 just 2:34 after Hjalmarssons fourth goal. It was Rozsivals first since March 1, 2012, for Phoenix. Hjalmarsson hadnt scored since Nov. 30 at Phoenix. The Sharks grabbed the lead midway through the first period. They had an extended possession in the Blackhawks zone before Demers skated into an open area on the right side of the net and one-timed a pass from Couture past Crawford. It was Demers third goal of the season, all in his past eight games. Couture extended his point streak to five games after scoring in each of his previous four.
